The month of November in 1984 was promising to be a good one for Celtic, although crowds at this time were poor.
A 2-0 win over Dumbarton at Parkhead – watched by only 13,791 – was followed by a 5-1 thumping of Hearts at Tynecastle, where 20,117 had turned up, to see a hat-trick by Brian McClair doing most of the damage, the other goals coming from Tommy Burns and Mo Johnston.
On this day in 1984, Celtic ran out at Parkhead to face St Mirren, with only 16, 418 in the ground. They were to witness a memorable moment in the history of the Premier League.
Celtic won 7-1, with contributions from Paul McStay in 20 mins…Tommy Burns, five minutes after half-time….Davie Provan, in 55 minutes….and Brain McClair, nine minutes from time.
The other three were scored by Frank McGarvey and it was the second of these, a header from close-in, that gave him the tally of 100 Premier League goals, the first player ever to do so.
