After some years at Kilmarnock, Tommy Burns came into Celtic Park as manager in July 1994, when Celtic were still re-organising behind the scenes after the boardroom rows of the earlier years.

Only two weeks into Tommy’s first season in charge, Celtic travelled across the city to Ibrox for the first league match of the season and won convincingly by 2 goals to 0, John Collins getting the first with a 20-yard free-kick which he bent round the Rangers wall and Paul McStay scoring the second with a well-struck shot from 25 yards.

On this day in 1994, Tommy Burns entered the transfer market for the first time as Celtic manager, paying in the region of £1.75million for the services of the young Motherwell midfielder Phil O’Donnell.

Phil made his debut for Celtic only a day later against Partick Thistle at Firhill and got off to a dream start, scoring both goals in the 2-1 win for his new club.

Many Happy Returns to John Hughes, the defender of that ilk, born on this day in 1964 in Edinburgh.
