The Victory Cup was put up for competition to celebrate the end of World War 2 after the surrender of Japan and was played over a three-month period at the end of season 1945/46.

The first round ties were all two-legged affairs and on this day in 1946, Celtic travelled up to Perth to meet St Johnstone, at that time in the second division.

The game was played at Muirton Park, now the site of a supermarket, the club having sold the ground and moved to McDiarmid Park. The Celtic team was Willie Miller, Bobby Hogg, Roy Milne, John McPhail, Jimmy Mallan, Pat McAuley, Matt Lynch, Tommy Kiernan, Jackie Gallacher, Jimmy Sirrell and Pat O’Sullivan.

The match turned out to be a very one-sided affair, Celtic winning 8-2, the goals coming from Jackie Gallacher (4), Tommy Kiernan ( 3) and Matt Lynch. In the return leg at Parkhead, Celtic won again, this time by 5-0, making the aggregate score 13-2.
