Celtic will not appoint John Kennedy as the next permanent manager of the club, according to Frank McAvennie.
The former Celtic striker spoke to Football Insider and claimed there is “not a chance” of Kennedy succeeding Neil Lennon at Parkhead as he is not experienced enough. Kennedy, who burst onto the scene at Celtic Park as a player in 2004, is the bookie’s favourite for the job after opening his period in interim charge with a 1-0 victory over Aberdeen.
But McAvennie doesn’t share that view. “I would like to see John go away and get experience as a manager somewhere else,” he said.
“Not a chance he will be the permanent manager of Celtic. The fans would not be happy. It is nothing against John, but we need a big name. If you want to sell season tickets for next year you need a big name – John is not that man.”
McAvennie continued by explaining that the door may be open for Kennedy in the future. “John has to go away and show his credentials as a manager before taking the Celtic job permanently, for me anyway. He needs to go away, learn and make mistakes away from Celtic.”
The colourful character then concluded by saying: “He is Peter Lawwell’s guy and Lawwell will not be there next season. It is time for a clear out.”
