Jonny Evans not a Celtic target, but a new central defender still a priority for Rodgers

Jonny Evans is NOT a Celtic target in this summer’s transfer window as Brendan Rodgers shapes this current Celtic team in his image. That’s according to Football Scotland, who claim that although there is a mutual and very strong respect between the two men following their Leicester City relationship, it is not a move that will be happening.

Brendan Rodgers has a substantial transfer budget available to him this summer and this was further increased by the sale of Jota to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad for a record breaking transfer fee of around £27m – for both the former fans favourite, called ‘The Superstar from Portugual’ and the club this deal was akin to both enjoying online casinos with bonus included being that Brendan Rodgers can use these unexpected funds to boost his own summer spending with a new central defender likely to be near the top of the Irishman’s list of priorities.

Many amongst the support were shocked and horrified at the prospect of the Hoops signing up the 35-year-old veteran who is also a free agent. Many saw shades of Kolo Toure in a potential move for the Northern Ireland cap and would much prefer the club to continue down the route of long-term succession planning with up and coming talent.

Football Scotland’s report assuaged any fears that the fanbase may have had regarding a move for Evans – who is also said to be a fan of the latest Ibrox club too – as they revealed that there in no substance to the weekend rumour linking Evans with a move to the Hoops:

“Jonny Evans is not a Celtic transfer target this summer despite his strong relationship with Brendan Rodgers. The former Leicester City defender is on the hunt for a new club after leaving the Foxes and it was suggested last week that his former manager, Rodgers, was hoping to entice him to join the Hoops. But Football Scotland understands there has been no approach from the club to player this summer as he trains with Manchester United with their squad in a bid to keep fit for the upcoming campaign ahead.

“Evans, Football Scotland understands, has a great personal relationship with his Northern Ireland countryman Rodgers and there remains a respect between the two from their time down south. But a deal won’t be done this summer to take the 35-year-old to Glasgow as it’s believed he wants to remain in England.”

You can all relax now…

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
