Kasper Schmeichel – Celtic debut “exceeded expectations”

Celtic debut “exceeded expectations” says new signing Kasper Schmeichel…

Speaking to Celtic TV after flag day, the goalkeeper said: “It’s been an incredible welcome I’ve got to say it’s been overwhelming and something that makes me very proud but it also makes me very, very motivated to keep winning for this team.”

The 37-year-old was named as the starting goalkeeper for Celtic’s clash against Kilmarnock and recorded his first clean sheet of the league season.

He has received plaudits from the Celtic support for some of the saves he has made so far in pre-season and in our first game. He certainly seems to be someone you can trust between the sticks, and it will be interesting to see him show his class when the Champions League comes around.

The new man was delighted with his teammates, saying that he’d be “buzzing” if he could have a full season of performances like that from them.

He went on: “The lads were brilliant. We had a really good preseason, played some incredible stuff but today [against Kilmarnock]was a slightly different kind of game.

“I thought we did really well. I thought we played the ball fast we had good combinations, good goals, everything was good.

“But they [Kilmarnock] didn’t really create any chances and that’s because the boys, not just at the back, but from the front, defended. The counter press was good so a very good afternoon.”

And he’ll be hoping that performances where he has little to do will continue, as Schmeichel believes that the best games are those where the goalkeeper is essentially invisible.

“Those games, for me, are the best performances because those are when we’re clicking as a team when we’re working at our absolute best,” Schmeichel explained. “Those are the ones where you have communicated, you have shifted, you have worked with the defence, with the midfield, with the attack, and everything is in-sync and you don’t see the goalkeeper making saves, you don’t see the goalkeeper doing anything eye-catching.”

Celtic continue their defence of the league title against Hibernian in the capital next Sunday. Let’s hope for another dominant performance that will see us stay top of the league, looking down on theRangers.
