Argentine left-back Alexandro Bernabei appears to be a player Celtic seem very much interested in bringing to the club this summer, and despite it being reported Celtic have had an initial bid knocked back by his club Lanus, it appears there remains room for the two sides to find an agreement on a fee.
Bernabei was omitted from recent match-day squads by his club, with it being reported his absence was down to the player being in Europe acquiring an Italian passport, indicating whether it be to Celtic or another suitor, Bernabei and his representatives are certainly preparing themselves for the next stage of his career being played out in Europe.
Celtic are keen to bring in a quality competitor to challenge the impressive Greg Taylor, ahead of a campaign that will be fought on four fronts next season. One of those competitions will surely interest Bernabei, as Celtic head into the group stages of the Champions League. And for a left back who clearly has international aspirations with Argentina, performing well in such a competitive environment would certainly improve his chances in that regard.
At the moment the two clubs appear to have differing views on the transfer fee, with Lanus apparently looking for close to £4m for Bernabei and Celtic rumoured to have entered negotiations win a figure around half of that sought by Lanus.
But as with all negotiations there is surely room for compromise on both sides, and according to Record Sport Lanus certainly don’t appear to be closing the door on further bids for Bernabei with a spokesperson for the Argentinian club quoted as saying:
“If a suitable proposition arrives, we will study it. But at this moment, we aren’t not required to sell Alexandro.”
Meanwhile Oller Group representing the player have also confirmed there is interest in Bernabei, without naming Celtic of course’
“We expect news in the next few weeks but Alexandro is calm. He has the ability to play and be successful in Europe. Now is not the time to discuss names but clubs are asking about him.”
Bernabei is certainly the sort of talent that would evidence Celtic have a real ambition to prepare to be competitive in European football, as Bernabei is certainly not a signing you would consider as one being sought to simply solidify a position of domestic dominance.
It will be interesting to see if a follow up bid from Celtic can lead to Lanus and the club reaching an agreement on this one, because it would be a real statement of intent from the club on the back of signing Cameron Carter-Vickers on a permanent basis – and hopefully the soon to be confirmed acquisition of Jota from Benfica.
