Celtic have confirmed that they will conduct an internal investigation into alleged inappropriate online behaviour by striker Leigh Griffiths. Just days after the club gave the 30-year-old a one-year contract extension, he is generating headlines for the wrong reasons. At a time when the club should be looking at recruitment and arranging for the return of supporters, an investigation into Griffiths’ conduct requires immediate attention.

As reported by The Scottish Sun, a club spokesman said that the player would leave Ange Postecoglou’s training camp in Wales as Celtic investigate the claim.

“We have been made aware of online comments concerning Leigh Griffiths. The Club will now look into this matter carefully.

“Leigh has left the Club’s training camp as we do this.

“It would not be appropriate to make any further comment at this time.”

The striker has scored 123 goals for the club and his deal expired at the end of June but the new manager decided to give the player a final chance, albeit on reduced wages.

Ange Postecoglou will likely be annoyed at the sideshow that Griffiths has created around the pre-season plans. The support was split on whether the player should have been offered a new contract but if the internal investigation goes against the striker, they must act appropriately and protect the integrity of the club.
