Could Liel be for the off? He’s a player we should be looking to keep…

Liel Abada has this morning been linked with a move to Turkish side Fenerbahce. The 21 year-old Israeli winger has been the subject of rumours for a few months now, what with his change of agent and him not yet signing an extended contract at Celtic.

According to reports from the reliable Stephen McGowan the club are looking for somewhere in the region of £10 million. That would represent a good profit on the £4.5 paid out to Maccabi Petah Tikva for Liel’s services in 2021.

But we shouldn’t be looking to cash in on liel as he’s a talented player with a great future, and although his game is still a bit inconsistent, he has the talent to to be a top class player.

£10 million for a player of his calibre also seems a bit on the low side, we should be looking for £15 million in my opinion.

The ball is also firmly in the club’s court, with liel having three years remaining on his contract. We should be aiming to keep him at the club and rebuff any offers. Liel said not long ago that he’s happy at the club so keeping him shouldn’t be that difficult.

And while his stats last season were excellent, it’s fair to appreciate that he may have been somewhat frustrated by his lack of minutes under Ange Postecoglou who preferred to play Daizen Maeda on the left wing and that meant Jota playing on the right, taking Ababa’s position for much of the season.

Even on the evidence of yesterday, it appears that Brendan Rodgers might see Maeda as a striker – and he grabbed a hat-trick – rather than a left winger. And with Jota away anyway it’s looks very much like Abada will have every chance of being a first pick this season. That being the case he’s get a bigger move next summer than Turkish football offers and Celtic would certainly get a higher transfer fee.

So it would be daft to consider selling Abada at this stage surely? But if he wants away then keeping want-aways is NOT a good plan either. Brendan will decide one way or the other.
