Luke McCowan – A clever signing who will prove himself to be an excellent Celtic player

Luke McCowan will prove be a good signing…

Luke McCowan became our final signing in the window when he was signed late last night in a deal believed to be worth around £1 million from Dundee.

The 26 year old midfielder might not have been the biggest name on our list of targets, but he’s still a worthy acquisition all the same and he’s the one player in the Scottish Premiership outside of our own squad who has clearly caught the eye of Brendan Rodgers.

Some supporters turn their noses up at us signing players from our own league, they all want the big money foreign players, but there is quality to be had in our own back yard, which has been proven in years gone by with the likes of Barry Robson, Paul Hartley, and more recently Stuart Armstrong and Greg Taylor all being a success after moving from rival Scottish sides.

I’m not saying Luke will emulate these players, but he’ll more than prove his worth.

He’s a decent player with a cracking left peg, he’s energetic and he’s skilful. He was the captain of Dundee, so he’s obviously a great leader. He’s also good at set pieces, something we’ve been missing for quite some time. He scores penalties and as you know we haven’t been too consistent at finding the back of the net from the penalty spot.

He’s also a Celtic supporter who’s climbed his way through the lower ranks of Scottish football to get where he is today, with Ayr United set to get a development fee payment from this deal, so that will even help Scott Brown! He’ll appreciate this move more than anyone and will burst a gut to give his all for the club, you can be sure of that. He also replaces fellow Celtic supporter Mikey Johnston in the European squad for Scottish or homegrown players so this move makes perfect sense in that regard too. Best of luck to Mikey at West Brom too.

You could see Luke’s on his face when we walked out at Celtic Park late last night as he was paraded as a Celtic player. He was me and you in that situation, the stuff of dreams. He’ll more than contribute to this club, mark my words. Welcome to Celtic Luke, a Celtic supporter who is now living the dream.

Welcome home Luke!

  1. Agree 100%

I would also add Broony tae the list of Scottish players that joined us .. & he did no bad!

Look at guys fae the past that had great careers & were Hoops fans tae, the centenary year squad had a fair few.

  2. Still don’t know why it took ourselves so long to be making a no brainer of a deal for McCowan, but just relieved that comman sence finally kicked in?
Unfortunately it only highlights Rodgers failures during this window regarding our homegrown quota required within our finalised 25man squad also?
McCowan is a very worthy player for ourselves to be having within our 25man squad imo?
A decent option also to have within our homegrown quota also, which helps benefit our squad also?
Yet, McCowan, only brings our homegrown quota up to 6, with looking like our 3rd choice keeper in Bain, along with our 3rd choice LB in Anderson possibly having to fill our remaining last 2 positions within our homegrown quota?
Still have Turley as a potential B list player also?
Actually expected Rodgers to deal with this ongoing issue within our finalised 25man squad better, than it was done imo?
Thankfully we were able to keep hold of rocki, who I would class as a better CB option than Welsh?
Yet Welsh gets the position ahead of rocki within our 25man squad, due to Welsh and the homegrown quota requirements?
Even selling Mikey Johnston, without a Scottish replacement in mind, wasn’t the best of decisions taken either imo?
So although looking at our finalised 25man squad, would still regard it as having a stronger overall look about it, compared to last season?
Yet still believe that it could have been improved even better, and that would require ourselves to start getting this homegrown quota requirements sorted out far better than we continue to operate at?
Thankfully McCowan has the potential to help ourselves hugely in that regards, and more than worthy of his squad place also.

  3. A decent enough player but a terrible signing.

If we actually wanted him, we’d have brought him in in June given the minimal fee.

We’re addicted to bloating the squad with cheap players who contribute little and what little game time they get could be more usefully used to develop academy players.

Of course I want McCowan to succeed, I would be over the moon if he goes down as one of our best signings of the 21st century but looking at it objectively it has the hallmarks of a confused and ineffectual transfer policy.

    • Dae ye even watch fitbaw? Have ye ever kucked a baw?

The bhoy is a crackin player & gie oor midfield the runaround last season. He cost £1 million & is a Celtic fan & Scottish .. there is zero risk! You will look back on that comment & realise just how dumb you really are!

This is exactly the type of signin we should dae mare of rather than the likes of Beranbei fae half way roond the world that have tae learn a new language & settle in tae a new country etc etc etc!

This bhoy is tried & tested wi great numbers in a lesser team. I repeat, ZERO RISK, ZERO LOSS!

Man, you’re so blinkered & dumb it actually hurts ma feckin eyes!
