Scotland left it late to score against the Faroe Islands tonight. After the highs of the frantic win over Israel, fans were hoping it would be a straightforward night in Torshavn. Scott McTominay was the hero on Saturday but it was Lyndon Dykes that came up with the goods for Steve Clarke. Celtic captain Callum McGregor was rested and omitted from the Starting XI but the manager was forced to call upon his trusted lieutenant deep into the second half as Scotland wrestled three points.
The QPR forward, who received a yellow card meaning he will not be eligible to face Moldova next month, met a Nathan Patterson cross to send Scotland into a priceless lead against the Faroe Islands.
Craig Gordon was probably Scotland’s MOTM, making some incredible stops against the minnows.
The game was a tough watch but the introduction of Callum McGregor certainly allowed Scotland to attack with more fluency and precision, something that had been missing in the first 70 minutes. Clarke will likely wish that he had started Patterson and McGregor as both helped pull Scotland to an important win to maintain a four-point cushion over Israel.
