Matt O’Riley improved massively under Brendan, Alistair Johnston is the same

Matt improved massively under Brendan. AJ is the same…

It’s very much accepted that Matt O’Riley improved so much under the management of Brendan Rodgers that was part of the reason he earned a record breaking move to Brighton.

Matt was already a good player, but improved greatly under the Irishman in a short space of time so much so that he was arguably our best player last season.

That’s the effect that Brendan has on players. Just look at the way that he nurtured the talent of Moussa Dembele and turned him into a £20 million player. Or the way he revitalised the career of a 31 year old Scott Brown.

You could also say the same about the likes of Kieran Tierney, Stuart Armstrong and Callum McGregor. Players who all owe a great deal of gratitude to the Irishman for the successful careers that they currently enjoy.

Another player that has improved ten fold under Brendan is Alistair Johnston. The Canadian like Matt was also a good player under Ange Postecoglou, but he’s now starting to go up a level under the guidance of the Irishman.

AJ has took his International form which seen him named in the Copa America team of the tournament into his club form and we are truly reaping the benefits.

His display against St Mirren on Sunday was testament to that and he rounded it off by scoring a wonderful goal.

AJ is a wonderful modern day full back. He has pace, energy, and he’s strong. He can improve on a few aspects, but under Brendan he will undoubtedly do just that. He has the makings of a terrific player. One we are lucky to have.
