Matt O’Riley may return to English football, but not yet

Football insider, Dean Jones has given an update on the current transfer links between Matt O’Riley and Leeds United.

Over the past two seasons,  midfielder Matt O’Riley has flourished at Celtic. When captain Callum McGregor was out injured, O’Riley stepped in and filled the role of commanding the midfield, and he did a tremendous job, becoming one of Ange Postecoglou’s consistent performers.

Under Brendan Rodgers, O’Riley is one of the first names on the team-sheet and has proven himself to be an important asset to new Celtic manager. This is why any transfer rumour of O’Riley leaving this summer hasn’t been given much credence, as Rodgers will be determined to retain his Danish U21 player.

However, Dean Jones has reported that Matt O’Riley will eventually want to make a move back to English football. Celtic fans shouldn’t be too worried though, as he concedes that it would take a lot of persuading from Leeds to secure the signing. As reported by Give Me Sport, Jones explained.

“Leeds are also being linked with Matt O’Riley which is a really absorbing one as I have been told that he does have a plan to get back to English football at some point – but it would take some persuading for this one to happen right now. Celtic are not very open to it from what I heard.”

Celtic currently have Matt O’Riley contracted at Celtic until the summer of 2026, so the club stands in a very strong position. It is very unlikely that Leeds will lure O’Riley down south in this window but we should appreciate the player while he’s here because it a year or two he’s likely to move on.
