Frank McAvennie has said that the spell on the sidelines will benefit Callum McGregor, even if Celtic miss their skipper. The Celtic captain committed his future to the club in a five-year deal but is currently out with a minor knock. However, the Centenary Final hero McAvennie told Football Insider that he thinks the spell on the sidelines will allow the central midfielder to rest up after a relentless schedule.
“This break will do him good. He hasn’t had a rest for two years. Coming back after three games will do him the world of good.
“I’ve been asking for him to be left out because he has barely missed a game in two years, including games for his country.
“He never gets a break so I know he has an injury but this will do him the world of good. Luckily, the midfield isn’t a problem for the Postecoglou.”
Ismaila Soro and James McCarthy have been deployed in the last three games with McGregor out; however, McCarthy struggled in the defeat to Livi but impressed against Raith Rovers. The Ireland Internationalist assisted Jota’s opener with a pass that went through the Kirkcaldy side’s defensive lines.
Celtic have suffered from a bit of an injury crisis in the last few weeks with key first-team players still out injured. Ange Postecoglou has had to contend with a fair deal since he arrived in the summer but if he has yet had a full complement of players to choose from. Hopefully in the next few weeks we will see this.
