McCall suggests Lennon uses last season’s star pairing to get 10IAR back on track

IAN MCCALL has said that Neil Lennon should look to reunite Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard in attack in order to bring about a change in Celtic’s fortunes. The Scottish Champions and 10IAR chasers endured a dismal week, falling 11 points behind Rangers and exiting the League Cup and Europa League.

Speaking to the BBC Scottish Football podcast, the Partick Thistle manager reckons that Lennon should look to bring Leigh Griffiths back into the fold and try and bring about a return to form, that Lennon masterminded in the second half of last season. Edouard and Griffiths played in a 3-5-2 and it blew teams away as Celtic romped to 9IAR.

“I remember the second half of last season when they went on that great run, the catalyst of that was Edouard and Griffiths. But they don’t play together.

“Usually you build a team from the back. I’m not giving Neil advice on his job, particularly on football matters, but I think you start at the front, you get Griffiths fit.

“Because how good has Neil Lennon been for Leigh Griffiths? Surely he thinks he has to dig him out.”

The pair were in scintillating form last season. Edouard had the freedom to come short and engage with play, whilst Griffiths pushed on as the point of attack. The play was incredible and has it not been for COVID-19, Celtic would have won the league by a sizeable amount as well as liking putting Steven Gerrard out of a job.

Griffiths has been disappointing this season, coming back to pre-season overweight and struggling to keep himself fit – which is frustrating as he showed glimpses of what he can do in games against Aberdeen and St Johnstone. McCall is right in the fact that Griffiths has the ability to swing the momentum back in Celtic’s favour but the player needs to want to get himself fit.

Lennon, like a lot of the Celtic support, will be desperate to get Griffiths back into the first team fold but if he cannot perform for the manager then questions need to be asked as to whether he is good enough to stay at the club.
