On this day at Celtic Park in 1936, Celtic beat a strong Motherwell side 5-0 in a league match.

The Celtic team on the day was Kennaway, Hogg, Morrison, Geatons, Lyon, Paterson, Delaney, Buchan, McGrory, Crum, Murphy.

This was a good victory against a team lying 4th from top in the league table and these words from a daily paper of the time give a precise account of the main man –

‘McGrory was the man mainly responsible for the rout. He scored 3 goals in 3 minutes, all in his best style and this provided a memorable feature of a rather disappointing match.

‘The 3 goals came midway through the second half. For the first, a cross by Delaney was met on the volley by McGrory. And the other two were pretty similar, crosses by Murphy and headers by McGrory’.

The result put Celtic 4 points clear at the top of the league table.
