Scott McKenna to Celtic in the current rumour, but is there any truth in interest from the club?

Celtic have been heavily linked with a move for Nottingham Forest centre back Scott McKenna. And rather pathetically theRangers have now also been credited with an interest in the player. The former Aberdeen defender was also linked with a move to the club in the summer, but a move never materialised with the club opting to sign Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki instead.

That begs the question. Is there any truth in the rumour and would the Scotland international add more quality to our squad? Brendan Rodgers was of course credited with interest in McKenna during his first spell at the club but nothing ever came to fruition, perhaps because Aberdeen were looking for bigger money from England.

Could the Celtic be interested in making a move for the big defender this time around? I for one can’t see it as we already have five centre backs on the books.

There is rumours that Gustaf Lagerbielke might be on the move, but that still leaves us with four centre backs, and I can’t see us going in for another when we have other areas that need tended to more urgently. Scott McKenna is a decent centre back and would add quality to our squad, but a left back and centre forward are bigger priorities for us.

It would be interesting if it emerged that McKenna had offers from Celtic and theRangers. The player is a Celtic supporter, as many of their supporters have been noting on social media over the past few days.  So if the heart says Celtic,  it might come down to one of three other factors, money, the likelihood of first team football and the chances of lifting silverware.

McKenna is a left-sided central defender so would be in competition for Liam Scales who has been pretty much flawless since breaking into the Celtic first team this season. It looks like it would take an injury to shift him.

So McKenna might not get much football this season if he comes to Celtic and that’s exactly the position he’s currently in at the City Ground.

Of course you can never say never, time will tell, and Brendan clearly does like former Aberdeen defender.
