Medical booked as Celtic set to sign Korean striker Hyeon-gyu Oh

Celtic are close to reaching an agreement to sign South Korea’s World Cup striker Hyeon-gyu Oh – he’s the eager one, not the reluctant chap – from K-League side Suwon Bluewings.

Sky Sports News reports that the player is keen on the move to Celtic Park and that the Hoops are confident the deal can be done with plans now in place for a medical.

Celtic had made an offer for Oh’s South Korean team mate Gue-sung Cho, but talks stalled with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and the player decided to weigh-up his options.

Celtic look likely to lose Greek striker Giorgos Giakoumakis in this transfer window, although Ange Postecoglou continues to resist all talk of anything happening. Giakoumakis was left out of the squad in midweek for the match against St Mirren with the manager saying he had a slight issue after coming off the bench at Hampden in the League Cup semi-final win over Kilmarnock. Postecoglou also suggested that Giakoumakis could play against Greenock Morton tomorrow in the Scottish Cup.

J-League side Urawa Red Diamonds lead the chase for Giakoumakis’ signature but there are other options including clubs in Italy and Spain.

The Hyeon-gyu Oh story has really warmed up over the last 24 hours with the Seoul CSC providing an update from the Korean media. They explain the news as follows:

In Korea, news article updated Oh Hyeon-gyu deal status – a informant in Suwon club said:

“Now Celtic made their 4th offer as GBP 3m and the club must agree to the deal. We will discuss internally during Lunar New Year and make a decision.” Adding to that, Celtic offered a tenfold+ wage of what he is being paid in Suwon Samsung Bluewings. As he expressed he wishes to get to the Parkhead, the deal looks very promising now.

S.Korean National Broadcaster KBS interviewed the Suwon gaffer, he said:

“Initially I told him let’s wait for another season. Then Celtic made better offer 4 times, every single time Oh requested me to let him go. Now I can’t say no to him”
