Mikey Johnston opts for West Brom, medical booked ahead of £3m transfer

Mikey Johnston is set to leave Celtic today after opting to re-join West Brom, where he enjoyed a successful loan spell last season.

The Celtic Academy graduate had a choice of Championship clubs to choose from after Celtic accepted bids from West Brom, Burnley and Sheffield United, leaving the decision with the player himself.

Mikey appears to have opted for a Hawthorns re-union and travelled to the West Midlands last night in order to undergo a medical today. Celtic will receive a £3m fee for the Irish international winger who was informed by Brendan Rodgers that his game-time would be limited at Celtic this season.

Johnston was always a key target for West Brom boss Carlos Corberan in the summer transfer window and the £3m deal reached with Celtic will conclude the club’s transfer business for the summer in terms of new signings. Mikey Johnston, subject to no mishaps in his medical, with join West Brom on a four-year contract.

Mikey Johnston joined West Brom on loan from Celtic in the January transfer window, making 20 appearances and scoring six goals with two assists on top. He was named as the Championship Player of the Month in March after scoring four times in five appearances, becoming a huge favourite at the Hawthorns.

Mikey has plenty of raw talent and is highly regarded by Brendan Rodgers and the coaching staff at Celtic. However sometimes it just doesn’t work out for players at Celtic where the expectations are so high. Mikey will go on to have a fine career in England and at international level with the Republic of Ireland. Best of luck to him!
