Mulgrew’s Celtic Moments – Cheers Charlie

Former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew this week announced his retirement from the game at the ripe old age of 37. Charlie came through the Celtic youth ranks but left for Wolves in 2006 without playing a competitive game for the club.

His time at Molineux wasn’t exactly a hit and he went out on loan a couple of times, most notably back up north with Aberdeen. His form with the Dons persuaded Neil Lennon to bring him back to Celtic in 2010. Charlie would spend a successful six years at the club winning seven honours in total.

Charlie who was naturally a left back transitioned into a fine centre back at Celtic. His goal record was superb for the club, scoring 28 goals in 207 appearances. Charlie could hit a free kick and his most notable one has got to be the one in the 2011 Scottish cup final win over Motherwell.

He also scored two and assisted two in the title clinching game at Rugby Park against Kilmarnock in 2012. His most memorable goal however has got to be his fine header to open the scoring in the last ever Old Firm game.

Charlie also had a decent spell with English side Blackburn Rovers before finishing his career back in Scotland with Dundee United, his second spell at Tannadice.

He’s now making an impact as a pundit so we’ll be seeing plenty of him on television talking about the game he loves. Best of luck with that Charlie!
