AIDEN MCGEADY has opened up about a potential return to Scotland a decade after he left for Spartak Moscow. The Sunderland winger, who turned 34 in April, was sent on loan after a fall out with Phil Parkinson at the Stadium of Light but now sits in a transfer limbo.
Speaking to the Go Radio Football Show, McGeady says that he would definitely consider a move to Scotland if it was his former club Celtic. Albeit, he acknowledges that his age might mean that a move is almost impossible. He does, however, say that a move back to Scotland could be difficult for him as he doesn’t know how long he has left despite feeling great.
“I don’t know, it’s a hard one. There’s been a little bit of talk before in January about me possibly going to Hibs with Jack Ross.
“Obviously I’ve had a few messages about it and stuff. But honestly, I don’t know.
“Maybe if Lenny gets in touch then I might, aye! But I don’t think that’s going to happen, I think that ship has sailed.
“My first choice would be Celtic but I think that time in my career has passed to be honest with you.
“I was 34 in April, I played in the Championship at the end of last season. It depends on how your body holds up but at my age just now I actually feel great.
“I’ve probably lost a little bit of speed but not to the extent where I’d say I’m slow. I honestly feel I could play another four or five years but whether someone employs you for that long is a different story.”
Lennon was actually appointed Celtic manager the summer McGeady left and oversaw his departure which funded the signings of players like Gary Hooper, Beram Kayal, Emilio Izaguirre and Anthony Stokes.
McGeady made 252 appearances for Celtic, scoring 37 goals and win four League Titles, two Scottish Cups and one League Cup. He is fondly remembered by Celtic supporters but for McGeady a return is not the right thing for the club at this stage – even if we are potentially short in the right winger position.
Hopefully McGeady finds a new club soon as he was a top player during his time at Celtic but has never really settled at anyone club like he did when he was with his boyhood club.
