Neil Lennon considered for Premiership vacancy but old rival is favourite

Neil Lennon is being considered as a candidate for the managerial vacancy at Dundee United. The Irishman is reportedly being considered by the Tannadice club as they look to make their third appointment of the season with Jack Ross and Liam Fox having come and gone.

According to The Courier, Lennon has been discussed internally but developments over the last twenty four hours suggest that an old rival of Lennon’s from Hibs and Celtic, Craig Levein, could be in pole position to takeover from Fox.

Lennon has been out of work since last year having left Omonia in Cyprus. However, Lenny will perhaps be waiting until April and his return to Scotland to decide on his next steps having admitted that he is keen on a return to the dugout. His success as a player and a manager will certainly endear him to the Dundee United hierarchy, although Hibs would be more relevant than his trophy-laden spells with Celtic.

Lennon won ten titles with Celtic, eight Scottish Cups and three league cups in two spells as manager and as a player. He will always be a Celtic legend but it was clear that his time as manager was up. Lennon will be recognised for all that he has done for the club but it may take some time as the 2020/21 season was incredibly tough for everyone involved.

Levein is the frontrunner and due to Lennon’s current plans to return to the UK in April, the ex-Hearts and Dundee United would offer an experienced pair of hands for the revamped footballing department with under-fire Tony Ashgar having resigned on Tuesday afternoon.
