Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon has offered his successor Ange Postecoglou support after Celtic failed to qualify for the Round of 16 in the Champions League. Lennon, who took his Celtic team to the Last 16 in the 2012/13 season, was full of support for the Australian and his team, who have impressed despite only having one point after four games.
Speaking to The Sun, Lenny reckons that Ange will benefit from the experience this season and come back and impress in the competition.
“I think the criticism is a little bit too much. Celtic haven’t been in the Champions League group stage since Brendan Rodgers five years ago, so they are novices. They are rebuilding.
“They were very unlucky not to beat Leipzig and Shakhtar. The performances have been good — just not the results. Ange will get better for this. He will feel he’s a much better manager for the experience.”
Postecoglou’s Celtic team have been impressive in the Champions League but results haven’t tallied with the performances. Although, qualification to the next stages is possible provided that Celtic can beat Shakhtar next week and then get a draw against Real Madrid, provided RB Leipzig beat the Ukrainians. Firstly, the manager of the Champions will look to continue the club’s defence of the League Cup this evening as Celtic travel to Fir Park to face Motherwell.
Meanwhile, Lennon lost his role at Omonia Nicosia in a bizarre move by the Cypriot outfit, especially considering Lennon took them to the Cyprus Cup and a place in the Europa League Group Stages. Hopefully, the Irishman is able to secure a role in the future.
