On This Day in 2001, Celtic travelled to Turin for their first game in the Champions League Group Stages. The Scottish Champions faced the Italians away from home and almost sealed a famous victory had it not been for a controversial penalty decision in the 90th minute.

David Trezeguet had the hosts up and running with a brace but goals from Stan Petrov and Henrik Larsson pulled Martin O’Neill’s team level. It looked as if a point would be secured, if not more for the Hoops.

Although, referee Hellmut Krug was conned into giving a spot-kick after Amoruso dived shamelessly. The player got back up and converted from the spot. Chris Sutton almost levelled up before the referee blew his whistle to signal full-time but Buffon saved on the line.

Juventus: Buffon, Montero, Thuram, Pessotto (Birindelli ’63), Iuliano, Zenoni, Tacchinardi, Davids (Red Card ’75), Salas (O’Neill ’69), Trezeguet, Del Piero (Amoruso ’87).

Celtic: Douglas, Valgaeren, Balde, Thompson (Petta ’58), Lambert, Lennon, Petrov, Mjallby, Agathe, Sutton, Larsson.
