Owen Beck to Celtic? Mixed opinions here on The Celtic Star

Celtic back in for Owen Beck. Is he the right choice? Mixed opinions on The Celtic Star…

Celtic have reportedly shown an interest in Liverpool defender Owen Beck once again. The left back spent last season on loan at Dundee and was named in the SPFL team of the year such was his good form. The Celtic Star Editor actually flagged up Owen Beck as a potential Celtic signing ahead of Dundee’s visit to Celtic Park last year and it looks like he was on the money with that one.

Celtic were interested in a loan deal for the Welsh under 21 international back in January, but a rare appearance for Liverpool shelved those plans because of the rule denying a player from turning out for three clubs in the one campaign.

Liverpool are willing to let the Welshman leave once more, but this time on a permanent deal, but that could scupper any potential move as it’s believed that Celtic would like any move to be a loan one, most probably with an option to buy.

There’s no doubting Beck is a good player with great potential, we witnessed that first hand last season. Although not in the 7-1 trouncing of the Dens Park side back in February! A game in which Beck was giving a torrid time by Yang. But is he the man to push Greg Taylor for a first team spot? Not many will think so, and would  like to see a higher calibre of player brought in. Others think differently, indeed the aforementioned article from our Editor last August was full of praise for Beck and he reckons that while at Dundee he was the best left-back in the league last season.

Given the chance to wok with and be developed by Brendan Rodgers, the sky’s the limit for the young talent.

Just an Ordinary Bhoy

Get rid of the two main men has the billionaire big shot not got enough money
The man that us so much trouble Peter lawell .
They forget very easily that the fans all 4 to 5mollion of us like to see our team win and play well .
Don’t do this to us you will probably lose the manager again ,it would look silly only 30.00
Turned up to watch a team which could have been great .

No I have not said it before

  3. Are we being just a bit to quick to write off off our own potential youngsters in Anderson and Monty at the moment?
Have both even got a future within our club any longer?
Personally don’t believe that the LB position will get any clearer until a better indication upon Taylor contract situation becomes clearer imo?
Would have thought that if Rodgers viewed Taylor as a long term option, his contract situation would have been resolved by now?
Especially as Rodgers has got improved contracts for a number of players already?
Be surprised if Rodgers decided to go with a Taylor/Anderson combination in the LB position for next season imo?
So could be a case of who Rodgers rates higher for the longer term in mind?
Regardless, the majority of our support wouldn’t regard either of Taylor or Anderson getting the 1st choice LB position for next season imo?
Yet Anderson would possibly be prepared to play the backup role more so than Taylor?
Somehow don’t see where beck fits into the current situation myself at present?
Still think a potential loan deal for Tierney could be the best all round solution to a problem position for ourselves imo?
This LB position hasn’t been resolved for 7 months now, could say even longer as bernie wasn’t really in Rodgers planning early doors upon his return?
So a guessing game remains in operation as to how Rodgers is looking at the LB position for next season at present?
Somehow, just would be surprised if Beck is regarded as the solution imo?

  4. I do think we need to either show faith in some of the young players trying to come through or move them on. I mean the likes of Anderson, Kelly, Frame, Montgomery, Lawal….it’s not easy breaking through but that’s how teams down south seem to do it or abroad – maybe playing an easier game or bringing on a youngster when there’s a goal cushion, to allow them to play….otherwise, academy lads will talk and decide once they’re fully ready, they’ll look for another club……..hopefully the pre-season performances will kick on and we do strengthen properly but I don’t always trust the board. We have so much money but seem to still haggle over the odd Mill here and there
