Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has said that Celtic’s resurgence this season could mean that Steven Gerrard’s one successful season in Scotland could be easily forgotten. The 41-year-old is on the verge of a move to Aston Villa with a meltdown pending across the city. Merson, who has become a pundit since retiring, has said that the Celtic are on their way back after a shambolic campaign last year.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson addressed Ange Postecoglou’s arrival and subsequent title chances under the likeable Australian as Gerrard appears to be headed for the Midlands.

“Celtic look as though they are coming back now. They’ve got the new manager in; they’ve bought into his ideas and they are moving up the table.”

“There is no foregone conclusion in the Scottish title race this year and, given the nature of football, if Celtic went on and won it this year everything from the year before is almost forgotten.”

The winners of the league this year will gain direct entry into the Champions League, earning the riches that are associated with Europe’s top competition. Celtic are also due to play at Hampden in the League Cup semi-final against St Johnstone with a place in the final against either Hibernian or Rangers up for grabs.

Postecoglou has had to overhaul an enormous amount since arriving from Yokohama F Marinos in the summer. Celtic have a favourable run of fixtures until the teams meet in January at Celtic Park and he will be hoping that his team can push above and beyond their Glasgow rivals in the hunt for the title. Ange has insisted that he isn’t looking at Ibrox and is only focused on his work.
