Paulo Bernardo is starting to prove his worth. If he keeps that up, signing him will be a no brainer…
Paulo Bernardo had something of a quiet start to life at Celtic and was used sparingly as a sub, and quite remarkably used more often in Champions League games than domestic matches.
But since his goal against Dundee at Dens on Boxing Day, he has looked a totally rejuvenated player. He of course added to that with a fine goal and display in the Glasgow Derby, and continued that good form by providing two assists in yesterday’s win at St Mirren.
To be fair to the Portuguese midfielder, he hasn’t played enough to be judged while also adapting to a new style of football. So while he hadn’t exactly set the heather on fire, he’s hardly been a disaster.
But to Paulo’s credit he’s knuckled down and done what is expected of him and showed us all how he was so highly rated at Benfica. He’s starting to make that midfield position his own and it can only benefit us to have such quality options in the middle of the park.
Celtic have an option to sign Paulo on a permanent contract in the summer. How much is anyone’s guess as figures of £1.5 million to £6 million have been spoken of, but whatever the fee, we have got to take up that option as it’s a no brainer.
After the match last night Brendan Rodgers spoke about Bernardo’s development at the club, as reported on The Celtic Star: “It is all patience. Sometimes at big clubs, there is no patience with young players. You can see him growing and developing.
“When you have young players that is what tends to happen if their attitude is right and their mentality is right. He has come in in these last few games and created goals and scored goals and he has put his foot in too. He is tenacious. Absolutely delighted for him. It is now about consistency.”
Paulo is only 21 and will only improve, let’s hope it’s at Celtic he continues to do so.
