Celtic have done brilliantly in the transfer market in recent years when they’ve taken a chance on someone who has plenty of talent and needs a chance to play at a higher level.
Hooper, Griffiths, van Dijk and Wanyama all spring to mind when you think of those types of signing, so it was a surprise when they took a chance on Albian Ajeti this summer.
He just didn’t get going at all during his spell with West Ham so it was a case of trying to fix a player with broken confidence, but it’s clear he’s still a work in progress.

He’s scored five in ten in the league but he’s become a bit of a flat-track bully, while he’s been pretty ineffective in Europe and in some of the tougher games.
He and Odsonne Edouard have had plenty of fitness and availability concerns this season so it’s not a surprise to see they’ve struggled to get going, but a report from HITC has pointed out the form of another summer target in Ivan Toney.
The Brentford striker has managed to net as many goals as Eddy and Ajeti combined so far this season, so questions will be asked about Celtic’s choice of signing here.
Toney fits the profile of signing that Celtic have seen success with due to his outstanding record at a lower level so he would’ve been hungry to prove himself.
It’s easy to forget that Ajeti is still only 23 years old and he barely got a chance to play at West Ham so hopefully he just needs a regular run of games to improve his sharpness and confidence, but it’s only fair to make this comparison again at the end of the season to make a proper judgement.
