Tonight’s return of the photo of the day feature brings you an image from a training session at Celtic Park in 1959.

The 1950s were an interesting period at Celtic. There were iconic triumphs with the Coronation Cup success, 7-1 demolition of Rangers, and a league and cup double in 1954. However, trophies were much sparser than they should have been. Indeed, there was a supreme amount of talent at the club from the likes of Bobby Carroll, Bertie Auld, Neil Mochan and Charlie Tully to Sean Fallon, John McPhail, Bobby Evans, Bobby Collins, Willie Fernie and Bertie Peacock etc.

Jock Stein had joined the club as a third choice central defender in 1951, but moved into coaching the reserves in the late 1950s. This introduction to coaching, paved the way for Big Jock’s managerial career, which would eventually deliver the greatest days in Celtic’s history.
