Today’s Celtic photo of the day comes from Fir Park on 7 May 1966. Celtic beat Motherwell, 1-0, thanks to an 89th minute goal by Bobby Lennox.

Celtic were already champions elect by having a far superior goal average at the top of the league, but Lennox’s late winner handed the Hoops the title outright, on points.

21,000 fans were in attendance, with the Celtic sections of the ground packed to the rafters. The fans refused to leave until Jock Stein and the players came out to salute them, some even climbed onto the roof of the stadium for a better view of the celebrations.

This was the first time that Celtic had won the league title since 1954, so the joy was off the scale. Little did we know that Celtic would go on to win the European Cup the next season and lift nine league championships in a row!
