Today’s photo of the day is a wonderful picture for those with an interest in the early years of Celtic Football Club. The image dates back to 25 May 1895 and is an action shot from the Glasgow Charity Cup Final at Cathkin Park. Celtic and Rangers were the participating teams, the green and white vertical stripes of Celtic triumphing 4-0 on the day.
According to contemporary reports, Celtic went with a 2-3-5 formation, selecting the following line up: Dan McArthur, Peter Meehan, Dan Doyle, Peter O’Rourke, James Kelly, Charles McEleney, Thomas Morrison, Johnny Madden, Alex ‘Sandy’ McMahon, John Ferguson, John Divers.
It was Sandy McMahon, also nicknamed “The Duke”, who stole the show as he scored a hat-trick. Captain James Kelly netted the other, in front of 10,000 spectators.
