‘Pounds, euros or magic beans’ – Currency confusion on Brighton’s 28m O’Riley bid

News is slowly leaking out on the extent of Brighton’s bid to sign Matt O’Riley from Celtic.

Earlier today Sky Sports reported that the two clubs were in talks for the Denmark international midfielder and that an opening bid had been submitted to the Scottish Champions.

However no price was mentioned. Celtic minimum acceptable price is believed to be £25m or around €30m. And there were moans apparently from Atalanta over the weekend suggesting that Celtic had increased the price as the end of the window nears.

Italian expert Nicolò Schira was asked if he had any information on the sum bid by Brighton and he confirmed the sum to be ’28m’, without mentioning the currency.  He usually mentions bids in Euros but unusually in this instance there was no clarity on whether it’s £28m of €28m. The first sum (£) you would imagine would be acceptable while the latter (€) would be unlikely to be enough to tempt Celtic as that’s around £23.8m, well short of Celtic’s minimum asking price, although higher than where Atalanta got to.

There are some fan media reports that the 28m is pounds sterling and that may well be the case. However it uncertain at the moment but is more likely to be Euros given the source of the information.  No doubt this will be clarified shortly.
