Neil Lennon was at the helm during Celtic’s nightmare covid season, when the club finished 25 points behind theRangers in the SPFL and bowed out of both cups before the semi final stage. Lennon’s team were also inches away from becoming the worst ever team in the history of the Europa League.
It was a disaster for Celtic supporters, many of whom had been dreaming of winning ten league titles in a row to go with their Quadruple Treble and a second run of 9 championships on the bounce.
There were some mitigating circumstances such as Bolingoli flouting covid rules, no supporters in the ground etc. But there can be no excuses for failing by such a margin, particularly in a league where Celtic have such a financial advantage and disparity on the pitch between themselves and the rest of their competitors.
That said, a clip of Neil Lennon speaking to PLZ Soccer has gone viral, in which the Irishman lists the elite clubs around the world who failed during the pandemic. “Liverpool won the title by about 30 points the previous season and then just scraped fourth,” Lennon said. While he also listed PSG, Madrid and Barcelona as elite clubs who failed to win the title, along with Juventus who were themselves going for 10 in a row.
