Russian side Spartak Moscow are reportedly considering a move for Celtic defender Carl Starfelt. The 28-year-old has been excellent since arriving from Rubin Kazan in the summer of 2021, forming a formidable defensive pairing with Cameron Carter-Vickers.
According to Football Scotland, Starfelt is a target for the Moscow outfit with Celtic braced for an approach. However, it is expected that Celtic would resist any such move given the impressive defensive partnership with Carter-Vickers.
Moreover, Starfelt spoke at the end of the season about his ambitions to play in the Champions League after missing all but one match through injury. That is without mentioning the illegal invasion of Ukraine by Russia which prompted sanctions, that continue in Russian football.
Starfelt has made 86 appearances for Celtic since arriving from the Russian side. In that time, he has scored three times and assisted twice. Brendan Rodgers will want to keep Starfelt around, even with the imminent arrival of Polish central defender Maik Nawrocki.
Celtic’s progression in Europe will require a strong rearguard and retaining top players is essential to ensuring that the club make significant progress.
