Friendlies in October do not come about often but on Wednesday evening Celtic came from behind to beat Sligo Rovers 3-2 with two late goals from Luis Palma. The Honduran grabbed a hat-trick and despite it being an exhibition match, it could be a much needed confidence booster for the out of form winger.
Fringe players and youngsters given a chance
Several fringe players and youngsters were given an opportunity by the manager. These included Lenny Agbaire, Francis Turley, Jude Bonnar, Lewis Dobbie, Mitchell Robertson, Liam Bonetig, Sean McArdle and Samuel Isiguzo.
In recent seasons there have been few examples of academy graduates such as Callum McGregor or James Forrest who have broken through from the B team setup or U18s and cemented a regular place in matchday squads.
The lure of English football
Partly through the lure of English football, our best talents have exited to acquire more money down south.
Moreover, eight of our younger players featured in Wednesday’s friendly. An experience to mix with fringe first team players such as Luis Palma, Luke McCowan and Alex Valle will undoubtedly be a learning curve in their early careers.
Physicality is the key
Speaking to Celtic TV after the game, Brendan Rodgers outlined where they need to improve in order to reach the next level, “I think it’s physicality. A lot of them need to improve on that aspect. They need to have more running power and get into contention more. They have talent with the ball, but it’s nowhere near enough.”
“That physicality will allow them to play at a higher tempo, but it’s nice for them to feel that and play out there in front of a crowd and play with that personality that you need to play for Celtic. Some of them did really, really well.”
Senior minutes awaits
Senior minutes awaits should Celtic’s academy players be able to combine both talent and physicality. Mastering the demands of the Celtic manager will be tough. But, if you want to be successful at the club, you will need to break down all the barriers.
Preparation for Aberdeen will start next week due to the players who are not on international duty being allowed a few days off.
