News broke late last night of a meeting between Brendan Rodgers and senior Celtic representatives in Mallorca. The rumour mill has been in overdrive and we are used to new names being mentioned on a daily basis, but this story comes from the reliable Stephen McGowan of the Daily Mail, and as we know Stephen is usually bang on the money regarding news coming out of Celtic.

According to McGowan, chief Executive Michael Nicholson and finance director Chris McKay have held talks with the Irishman on a possible return to Celtic Park, with the two Celtic executives flying to Mallorca by private jet to speak to the club’s former manager about a dramatic return to Paradise after Ange Postecoglou left last week to take the job at Tottenham.

Rodgers was planning to take a sabbatical from the game after his sacking from relegation-bound Leicester City in April. However the chance to return to Celtic may never come round again and Rodgers will feel he has everything in his locker as an elite football manager who knows the job, knows the club and and knows the city to take over from the hugely popular Postecoglou.

Opinions between the Celtic supporters as you can imagine is split, although a majority are now starting to be won over. I’ll include myself in that. Yes he ditched us and he has a lot to do to make it up to everyone of us, but in the bright light of day, it’s football. It happens.

It will always be in the back of our minds, wondering if he will abandon us again when the cash cow from down south starts singing, but out of all the candidates he’s the one who stands out most. He knows the city, the culture, the players and the league, and more importantly he’s a quality manager.

It just remains to be seen if Brendan himself is prepared to take the job. The next few days will tell us more, but one things for sure, if Brendan wants the job, he’ll get it. And that could have an impact in the Celtic Assistant Manager John Kennedy’ future.

Kennedy has told Celtic that he wants to leave the club to be re-united with Ange Postecoglou in London but he has also worked with Rodgers and his arrival could see Kennedy staying to work alongside Rodgers as his number 2, with Chris Davies likely to be going it alone as a manager with Swansea mentioned as his next destination.
