Former Celtic captain Scott Brown spoke to the media down at Somerset Park after being appointed Ayr Utd’s new manager earlier this week. Broony takes over a side in decent recent form but understands in such a tight league as the Championship a few wins could see him looking at the play-offs while a number of defeats puts his team in relegation trouble.
Things are afoot down on the south Ayrshire coast with the club investing in a new stand and are introducing corporate facilities catering for 180 supporters and that will bring in much needed additional revenue as Ayr eye a crack at the Scottish Premiership.
It’s Broony’s task to lead them there and hopefully he can make it Hampden in the Scottish Cup this season too – an Ayr v Celtic Scottish Cup Final would be something special would it not?
“It’s a long term journey” 💪

Speaking to Sky Sports Scotland the four Fleetwood Town manager was full of enthusiasm and optimism for his new role as Ayr Utd manager and didn’t rule out calling Brendan Rodgers for a loan deal or two to help in his endeavours.
Here’s some of what Scott Brown had to say: “I think short-term we focus game to game. That is the main thing for us. We need to start getting results and start pushing up the league. We are five points clear of bottom of the league which is great after the result, but we are also only four points off fourth place.
“The league is tight and it is one of those leagues you can go on a run for two or three games and be in those play-offs. You lose two or three you are in a relegation battle. For us we need to be aiming high. The lads should be in a positive position in this moment in time after the last three games and we just need to build on that,” Broony said.
Ask about using his Celtic contacts to bring in re-enforcements in this window, Broony certainly didn’t rule that out!
“We are always looking to strengthen the squad, everyone is in the same position and looking for the same players. They want strikers, centre-halves and midfielders. We will all be fighting for the same players but hopefully our contacts and a little favour here and there, we will manage to pull it off.”
Taking the job at Somerset Park means that there is going to be one definite Celtic reunion for the former Hoops skipper as the 39-year-old Celtic legend will be re-unite with his old Hoops team-mate Aiden McGeady who is currently an Ayr player while also serving as a technical manager.
“Aiden is a good lad and a fantastic football player,” Broony said. “He has had a great career. For us he is doing a technical directors course and working under Graeme Mathie.
He’s doing a lot of one to ones with the younger ones and got that drive as well.”
Scott Brown also spoke to Ayr’s own in-house channel and you can watch that below…
