Scott Browns details incredible growth in his teammate and hints that he could be the next captain

The captain of a football team – Vitally important or just a ceremonial role will little meaning?

In truth it probably comes down to the person doing it and how seriously they take it. Some will see it as an honour to lead the team and will give everything they can to inspire others, while some will just like to wear the armband and shake hands before the start of the game.

Scott Brown surely falls under the first category. You can see that his teammates look up to him and he has the determination and drive to inspire those around him, while there’s also an aura that will intimidate some opposing players.

He’s now coming towards the end of his career so it’s only natural that there will be some speculation over who would take over.

Callum McGregor might be the natural choice for many, And Glasgow Live reported on some of Brown’s comments to the Record about him.

It’s clear that he’s full of admiration for his teammate, and it’s interesting to hear about how much he’s grown:

“When we were dealing with stuff when this (the shutdown) all began to happen, he was my go-to man. He came up with a lot of things and has helped me out with a lot of the lads as well. It’s the mark of a captain that he can easily fall into that role.”

“In the last year and a half I’d say, he’s got that proper willingness, drive and self-belief. When he talks before games now, all of the lads listen. Maybe three or four years ago, Cal might have said something and it might not have had the same effect.”

“They have put that trust in him as well. When he has been captain, I’ve been in the dressing room and he speaks well. I know he’s the vice but it’s me and him who speak before the games as we chat away and relax. The lads will always listen to both of us but he speaks out so well and it’s those important things that he says.”

“And he’s only going to get better because he is still young.”

It’s interesting to hear and it’s also a good sign that he’s gained the respect of his teammates too.

Anyone who has played at any level will know there will always be one player who just shouts and says things that have little meaning, you need to have the respect of your teammates for it to make a difference.

Many fans will expect McGregor to step up and take the captaincy when Broony does finally hang them up, and it sounds like he’s the perfect man for the job.
