Second best and forever in Celtic’s shadow

St Mirren bottling it today, but theRangers back at their rightful place…

The onus was on St Mirren today to try and keep the pressure on Celtic after the Champions stretched their lead to seven points clear at the top on Saturday afternoon. They failed dismally  and in the end were convincingly beaten by theRangers, albeit the buddies had to play the majority of the match with a man less.

This is the sort of game the Paisley Saints had to win to be taken seriously in their pursuit of a top two finish. They had a chance to go six clear in second place against an Ibrox side who were easily beaten by Aberdeen at Ibrox last week and humiliated by Cypriot minnows Aris Limassol on Thursday night.

But the buddies supporters will be extremely disappointed that their side didn’t take advantage of a side low on confidence, and who had also played an energy sapping game in the searing heat at a Cyprus holiday resort just 72 hours earlier.

The two sides looked devoid of quality and on this evidence if these are our two closet challengers we should stroll to the title. theRangers however will have different ideas and are looking to take on the world under the leadership of Steven Davis and Alex Rae.

Today they declared that they were back, no not from the dead, but back to their rightful place, which is of course second best and forever in Celtic’s shadow.
