Solid, controlled performance, but glaringly obvious where we need to strengthen

We continued our perfect start to the season by beating Hibs 2-0 at Easter road this afternoon. Nicolas Kuhn gave us an early lead by tapping in a James Forrest cross.

The German then turned provider as his pass allowed Callum McGregor to score an absolute cracker. An effort that is surely an early contender for goal of the season.

The first half in particular we were absolutely fantastic and controlled the game throughout, the only disappointment is that we only had two goals to show for our efforts.

We slowed down a bit in the second period, but we still looked in complete control and never looked in danger of throwing our lead away.

As good and efficient as we were, it’s still glaringly obvious that we need strengthening in certain areas. Those particular areas being centre back and Centre forward.

Liam Scales has improved brilliantly under Brendan Rodgers and deserves great credit for getting to where he is now, but he’s not the standard we require if we want to improve on the European front. That’s not a dig at Liam, it’s just the honest truth, he’s no more than a squad player and it shows at times.

While up top we are just a Kyogo injury away from a disaster. Why we sold Oh without having a replacement lined up is really quite bizarre. Adam Idah is of course the man we are currently chasing, but time is ticking and we need to rectify it if we have to have any chance of being successful this campaign.

Yes we look a class above the rest of the league, but injuries and suspensions will inevitably arrive especially with the revamped extended champions league, and we need the required quality available to compete on all fronts.

  1. Agree completely, great article!

The most bewildering aspect of this situation is the myopic chase of AI! We need more than him so time to get moving on several fronts recruitment wise, CB, LB, CF x2, MO replacement if he goes, needs to happen this window

  2. I’m growing weary of the ‘Idah Saga’, watched him at the weekend, hardly encouraging. It’s a disgrace – but not a surprise – that, with the season well under way, we are weaker than last year. Agree about centre half needed, agree about the striking situation, surprised we haven’t tried Scales at full back and, maybe showing my age here, would love to have a winger who actually gets to the bye line, now and again!!

  3. CB, LB, replacement for Matt and a buddy up front for Kyogo. With £25M incoming and plenty of cash in the bank, I’d expect us to be spending a minimum £25-30M on these key positions. Get it done and see how we do in Europe
