ST MIRREN have called for the Premiership to be ended despite the calls from Rangers for an independent investigation resulted in an EGM being scheduled. The Premiership club released a statement yesterday demanding that the league must be ended in order to ensure the safety of supporters.

The Paisley club are adamant that the conclusion of the football season is more important than the EGM, which has been called by three clubs that cannot accept their own failures.

“As a club St Mirren has given its full backing to the SPFL’s plans to terminate the 2019/20 season in the Ladbrokes Championship, League 1 and League 2.

“UEFA have now paved the way for the unfinished Premiership season to be called without the remaining games being played.

“We believe these are highly sensible conditions as it has become increasingly likely that, firstly, no football will played until next season due to lockdown and social distancing and, secondly, that clubs across Scotland need to receive their end of season fee payments as quickly as possible or suffer serious financial problems.

“We appreciate that, in line with SPFL rules, there will now be an EGM on May 12th to discuss the allegations regarding the previous vote on the resolution to end the season.

“However, St Mirren’s view is that the safety of the supporters and the survival of Scottish football clubs must be the priority and therefore it is our opinion that the Premiership season should be terminated immediately. This will allow for end of season payments to be made and for clubs to start to plan as best they can for next season.”

The Saints want prize money paid out in order to ensure the survival of Scottish football as it allows clubs to prepare for the 2020/21 season, whenever that may be.

This is a pragmatic and measured response from a Premiership, which makes a change from the usual rhetoric of self interest that emanates from certain clubs. Scottish football’s existence hangs in the balance and the clubs, Scottish Government and footballing authorities need to be united in terms of saving the clubs that offer so much to communities and society.

As the St Mirren supporters said when Celtic visited Paisley in December, their Ultras group ‘North Bank’ held up a banner saying ‘The Future is in Your Hands’. This message should be delivered to the doors of Hampden and Ibrox in the coming days.
