Hyun-Jun Yang has enjoyed a positive start to his career in the East End of Glasgow playing for Celtic.
Providing a clever and crucial assist in Celtic’s 3-1 at Aberdeen all the way back in August, Yang has impressed and shown glimpses of the quality he possesses in his career so far playing for the Scottish Champions.
Such impressive cameos, along with injury to Liel Abada, resulted in the 21-year-old starting in the UEFA Champions League for the first time against Lazio.
A night that started full of optimism for Celtic and Yang ended in disappointment for both as an injury time goal from Pedro silenced Celtic Park and won the game for the Rome side, in a game where Yang struggled to replicate the impact he had made on previous games in a hoops shirt.
Since that disappointing night at Paradise, the South Korean international has been resigned to the bench in the majority of games, being afforded minimal minutes on the park.
James Forrest has been favoured over the South Korean from the start and off the bench in recent games, no doubt down to the trust and faith Rodgers has in the Celtic stalwart.
Brendan Rodgers has been desperately looking for his attacking substitutions to make an impact in level games recently, with Forrest entrusted with doing so against Atletico Madrid and Hibernian.
Yang was given the responsibility of changing the game last night, and he delivered the exact impact Rodgers and the Celtic support were looking for as the Hoops chased a winner.
Direct running, skill and trickery are hallmarks of Yang’s game, such hallmarks were shown in abundance in his performance as he completed five successful dribbles, the most in the match.
Compare that to who started in his place, Forrest, who completed zero dribbles in his fifty-six minutes on the park. A player full of talent and positivity, Yang remains rather raw and must round up the rest of his game, in particular his decision making if he wants to become a starter at Celtic.
Only 21 years of age, such development will only come with patience and gameptime. Off the back off his impressive showing last night, he is certainly deserving of more of the latter and Brendan Rodgers must be looking at starting Yang at Ross County this weekend.

A trophy laden career. An enormous haul of medals. Goals against Rangers. Goals at Hampden. Goals in Europe.
James Forrest has achieved this wonderful career in the face of brutal injuries and cynicism from his own support. If Rodgers picks him he can only do what he can do it his age. He has done it all before. Why does he continue to be constantly on trial ?
There was no Green Brigade last night for the second time this season. The first time ? That’s right. The boycott of this loyal home grown success story’s testimonial.
I find the begrudging nature of this article and its headline unbefitting of Jamesy. Short and/or selective memory.
A trophy laden career. An enormous haul of medals. Goals against Rangers. Goals at Hampden. Goals in Europe.
Never understood the animosity towards James Forrest throughout his career, though I know it is widespread amongst the fanbase, but not with coaches and fellow players or opponents. We had 4 wingers last night and only one made successful dribbles. Others ran well enough with the ball but moved and passed in front of the defence. This is as true of Palma and Maeda as it is of James, who made his 300th appearance last night and did well as a late sub against Hibs. He earned his starting place though he did not shine on the night.
Yang , also was not a “direct” replacement for him. Forrest played on the right with Palma on the left and were replaced by Maeda on the right and Yang on the left.
We should directly compare Maeda’s dribble rate with James and Yang’s with Palma’s
Cause he wont tackle wont hit the bye line hes finished as a winger he hasnt the bottle cant go by his cv its the now and hes not doing it missed a sitter on wed missed one sat hes a passenger till he shows some guts
The criticism has not been ‘ the now ‘. Itsbeen constant throughout his career, including its many high spots. I’ve always seen James as a wide attacking midfield player ( see his goal when Lustig stole the policeman’s hat ) as opposed to an out and out byline winger.
Love Celtic to bits but we are playing pants at the minute why is carthorse Rogers putting other carthorses and slow mow all hat yestermen back in the team Forrest and Turnbull are dog S—e why are they even playing they make us slow and boring get them out of the team and we will be better.
The bottom line is that James Forrest has more than earned the right to be respected by the Celtic support.
I find it absurd that I find myself explaining this.
