Chris Sutton love him (us) or loathe him (them) is one of the best football pundits in the business. He says what he thinks and doesn’t care who he upsets, and more importantly he’s right 99 percent of the time. Sutton is one of the rare figures connected to our game who never puts us down, he’s always talking up Scottish football without being patronising.

Last night he tweeted to have a go at English sides Manchester United and Arsenal while at the same time sticking up for Scottish football.

Chris Sutton tweeted “ Scottish football gets bashed from down south in European competition and sometimes deservedly so but just imagine if Celtic, Rangers and Aberdeen had the luxury of spending over 300 million assembling a squad and performing like Manchester United and Arsenal….That’s embarrassing”…

Both of course lost to sides who are nowhere near them in terms of finance. Showing that it’s not all about the money when it comes to football. Our sides admittedly have a woeful recent record in Europe but think what we could achieve with the riches on offer at these clubs. So it’s refreshing to see someone stick up for our game but not surprising when it comes to big Chris.

It makes a change rather than listing to the likes of Ally McCoist and Graeme Souness who regularly toe the party line with their English paymasters. It must be embarrassing for both that an Englishman regularly jumps to the support of our and their own nation more than they are ever prepared to do.

Hopefully Celtic can show them how it’s done tonight against Lazio at Celtic Park then Big Sutton won’t be slow in having his say!
