Talented Celtic youngster on the verge of £400k exit

Daniel Kelly looks set to seal his departure from Celtic this afternoon as he prepares to complete his transfer to Millwall. The 18-year-old rejected Celtic’s contract offer and Brendan Rodgers sidelined the player from first team training.

An agreement was reached to take Kelly to The Den in January but the clubs were able to thrash out a £400k deal for the talented youngster to leave this summer.

Sources have told Football Insider that the midfielder will complete his medical this afternoon in London ahead of the move to Millwall.

Kelly was destined for big things with Celtic and Rodgers was hyperbolic in his praise for the player following his goal against Dundee back in February. However, the contract issue quickly became apparent and Rodgers implied that the club wouldn’t be held ransom by young players, especially given the opportunity offered by the club.

Unfortunately for Kelly and Vata, the opportunity for first team football will be sought elsewhere which will pale in comparison to the challenge at Celtic. It appears that both players have listened to their representatives rather than pushing to be the next breakthrough star at Celtic. There is, of course, the argument that Celtic have not been as consistent in recent years with bringing through talent but the counter argument to that is that the finances on offer in England make it extremely difficult to offer players transitioning from youth football to first team football.

Bosun Lawal completed a £3m switch to Stoke City after impressing on loan at Fleetwood Town last season. The Irishman had set his sights on a breakthrough this year but Rodgers’ comments about him doing more showed that the manager wanted more from the versatile midfielder.
