The Telegraph football twitter has, in the last 30 minutes, posted the following announcement: Celtic to be awarded Premiership title, Aberdeen get European place, and no league expansion as clubs’ need for income drives SPFL coronavirus crisis negotiations.

The Telegraph article reveals provisional plans have now been made by the SPFL, which are expected to be followed up. If it goes ahead then Celtic are champions.

The newspaper claims: Celtic will be recognised as Scottish champions, Aberdeen will be awarded the country’s spare Europa League place, there will be no expansion of the SPFL Premiership, but the winter break would be axed, for next season at least, according to soundings taken by Telegraph Sport.

There have been many conflicting views from clubs. ‘Rangers’ want the season finished rather than conceding the title despite the fact Celtic are champions elect in any sane person’s eyes. Meanwhile, Hearts will not accept being relegated given that their form has improved compared to the early stages of the season.

However, a desperate need for cash may now have forced things. All aside of Celtic will be struggling without income and even then, the champions have announced a cut in wages for non playing staff. Hearts themselves have already flagged a 50% wage reduction for all staff and Dundee United have put almost all staff on furlough.

It is unclear as to whether Hearts would be doomed and Dundee Utd promoted in such a scenario, but at the top end, nine in a row would be complete.

An early end to the season would see prize money for league positions being paid out, which would be hugely beneficial to most clubs. The decision could, however, prevent any chance of Scottish clubs competing in Europe next season, despite the SPFL awarding Aberdeen a European place. This is due to the fact that UEFA appear determined for leagues to be concluded before awarding any such privilege and have sent out a warning letter earlier today on the matter.

If the Telegraph are to be believed though, then financial necessity has forced the governing body’s hand in Scotland and we are set to push on for ten next year.
