CELTIC’S class of 1979 met up this evening in Glasgow to reminisce about a game they won exactly 40 years ago this evening.
This was a Championship decider that had everything, and Celtic came out on top to win the league for Billy McNeill in his first season as our manager. Down to ten men and a goal behind too, Celtic appeared to need a miracle and that is exactly what unfolded.
Murdo MacLeod won his first medal as a Celtic player that night and the goal he scored in the last few seconds of the game is up there as one of the all-time great Celtic goals. There was a sizeable Rangers support on the terraces at Celtic Park that night and they certainly did an impressively quick disappearing act as soon as Murdo’s shot hit the postage stamp corner of big Peter McCloy’s net.
