David Turnbull has started every game this season except the final Europa League group stages match against Real Betis and even then he was forced into action as Celtic’s bad luck with injuries jumped up another notch.

Yesterday it all caught up with the former Motherwell midfielder as he became the latest Celtic star to suffer a hamstring injury during the first half of the League Cup Final against Hibs at Hampden. Turnbull was in tears – of frustration – as he left the field to be replaced by Nir Bitton.

Afterwards Ange Postecoglou admitted that he knew the reason for Turnbull being the latest in an increasingly long line of Celtic first team players to suffer the same injury.

“David suffered from the amount of games we are playing at the moment,” Ange admitted, as reported by Scottish Sun. “We are suffering because of that. We have not been able to rotate the squad a lot and that is hurting us at the moment, picking up these injuries. We will just see how he is.”

Turnbull is now almost certain to miss the remaining matches before the winter break – the trip to St Mirren in midweek, the game at McDiarmid Park on Boxing Day then the final match of 2021 against Hibs at Celtic Park on 29 December before the first game of the New Year and the final match before the winter break against theRangers at Celtic Park on 2 January.

If Celtic can 12 points from these four matches Ange Postecoglou will be well on course to add the Scottish Premiership to the League Cup then the Scottish Cup kicks off against Alloa Athletic towards the end of January. And by that time David Turnbull should be fit again.
