Chris Sutton has been a breath of fresh air since joining Sky Sports’ coverage of the Scottish Premiership. A welcome departure from the monotone drone of Andy Walker next to Ian Crocker in the commentary box, his juxtaposition to Sky Sports Scotland’s resident pundit, Kris Boyd, is something that promises to get better as the season goes on.

Clearly head and shoulders above the former Rangers striker in terms of… well… just about everything, he’s wasted no time in ribbing the ex-Ibrox attacker for his mind-numbing chat on the way to the game in the North East yesterday lunchtime. It’s really just common knowledge but Chris probably put it out there just in case anybody forgot how monumentally dull the biased Boyd is.

In an attempt to play the cheeky charlie figure as he does with Clinton Morrison on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, to little avail it must be said, this latest one from Bluenose Boyd really was cringe-worthy as it backfired spectacularly. Thinking of his wonderful native wit and impeccable comic timing (not!), Boyd asked Sutton if he couldn’t have did a Bernabei and “slept in” for the coverage yesterday.

However, Sutton merely swatted it aside and put the resident pundit in his place, saying: “That was the longest drive of my life!”. In a feeble attempt to save face and recover, the ex-Kilmarnock man said: “You can get a taxi the next time!”, although the Englishman just replied “very good…”.
