It’s starting to look like the Scottish Premiership is going to end prematurely, and it’s going to be better for some clubs than others.

The Guardian reported that clubs are set to vote on a motion to cancel the rest of the season and the standings would be based on the average amount of points per game.

That means there would only be one position change, so let’s look at the winners and losers if at least nine of the required twelve teams vote for this to happen:

Winners

Celtic – Celtic would be crowned champions and rightfully so, they have a clear lead at the top with only a handful of games to go, so they would’ve gone on to win it anyway. The margin at the top is large enough that declaring the season null and void would be a disgrace, so this would the the right decision.

the Rangers – Let’s face it, they are still miles away from actually winning silverware so they need to take small wins where they can. This would allow them to continue to feel like the world is against them and give them something else to moan about, which is all they really have to cling on to just now.

St Johnstone

This would be the only position change under these plans, and it would see Tommy Wright’s men leapfrog Hibs into the top six. They’re a point behind Hibs with a game in hand which was a trip to Ibrox, but the average points system means that they would move up the table. Realistically it’s only a space in the table and increased prize money, but that could actually pay for an extra player or two in Perth next season.

Losers

Hearts – It’s hard to deny that they’ve had this coming, but this would see Hearts relegated back to the Championship. In a way it would be deserved for the absolutely shambolic regime that gave Craig Levein full control. Daniel Stendel’s regime didn’t exactly turn things round either, but it sounds like we might be subjected to a long legal battle if this does happen.

Hibs – As seen with St Johnstone taking their space in the league, it would be a cruel end to their revival this season if they dropped into the bottom six. They looked like relegation candidates for so long but managed to climb the table, but it looks like the season will end in disappointment.

It’s likely the fall out could see some ugly scenes if certain clubs don’t take it will, but most of the season was finished and this final table would still reflect what’s gone on this year.
