“There will always be an open door here for Scott Brown,” Ange Postecoglou

I published an article yesterday regarding Scott Brown’s future, after the Celtic legend decided to terminate his Aberdeen contract as the opportunity to coach under new club manager Jim Goodwin looked set to be limited. Everyone knows Brown is looking towards a career in coaching or managing at the highest level and his role under Stephen Glass was due to be the first step towards that. The move has turned sour however following his former Hibs teammates sacking recently.

The former Scotland captain has allegedly been inundated with offers of support and help since he announced he had left Pittodrie. My article discussed how former manager at Celtic, Brendan Rodgers, had offered his former captain the chance to move down south and spend time working with him at the King Power stadium as Leicester look to finish in the European spots in the Premier League once again.

There had also been inevitable talk linking Scott back to Celtic, the club he led so well, for so many years on the pitch as club captain. Plenty have discussed if it would be right for Brown to go back now just as Ange has revolutionised the club and looks set to bring back the glory days to Parkhead.

Our manager has came out today to put to bed any rumours regarding how he would feel on the matter, and once again the Australian was at his best. You just know the hacks were hoping for Ange to take issue with the rumours but he spoke perfectly, explaining his admiration for Scott Brown and noting that there will always be a place for him at the club, but that it’s up to Brown to decide what he wants to do with his future.

Ange said at today’s Media Conference attended by The Celtic Star:

“From my perspective, I don’t think anyone should be in any doubt that there will always be an open door here for Scott Brown.

“The guy is one of the legends of this football club and will go down as one of the greatest ever.

“In terms of what he wants to do with his future, he’s best placed to answer that. He’s obviously made a decision right now and then after that, it’s up to him.

“From my perspective, he’s a guy who I’ve admired from afar but having been here for the last nine months and hearing about him and the kind of person he was – as much a footballer – he’s left a massive legacy here at the football club.

“Whatever he does in the future I’m sure there will always be a welcome place for him here.”

As I said Ange always handles these types of questions so well, never giving the MSM hacks the chance to concoct a negative story from his words. In all honesty, although Ange is being more than complimentary towards Brown here, I imagine he has no intention of reaching out to bring our former captain back at this moment. The club should be fully focused on securing a treble and don’t need any distractions at this stage of the season.

Ange Postecoglou is the type of manager who won’t be easily swayed. Once this season is out of the way, if he wants to take Brown back to the club I’m sure he will, but I doubt it’s in his thoughts. If anything the manager may be lining up other coaches he has worked with before, don’t forget he is working currently with coaches he inherited, so may have thoughts on a shake up in that regard once the season is complete.

I’m almost certain that we will one day see Scott Brown back at Parkhead in a coaching or managing capacity but I think it won’t be until after Ange Postecoglou has departed the club. I for one will be hoping by the time the Australian leaves Glasgow, Scott Brown will have a vast amount of experience under his belt gained elsewhere.

Hailing from Cushendall in the North of Ireland my formative years were spent watching Celtic during our barren spell through the 90's which meant I have appreciated our recent trophy-laden spell even more. Favourite matches home and away I've attended has to be beating Man Utd 1-0 at Celtic Park and being with my 2 brothers watching us beat Lazio 2-1 in Rome. Best away day experience? Has to be Munich with friends from Coatbridge...what a few days!

  1. Conall, why are you “almost certain” that Scott will be back? We know hee-haw about his coaching or managerial abilities, but we know he was an inspirational captain. One does not necessarily follow the other.
